The province's marine sector is a significant contributor to the provincial economy with 16% annual growth over the past three years. Local advantages include international companies with established products and services; international collaborative commercial and scientific relationships; educated, motivated and stable professional and technical workforce; and extensive research capabilities and infrastructure.

The department supports the sector by:
   working on development and promotion initiatives with key
      stakeholders including: Oceans Advance, Nati, Canadian Centre for
      Marine Communications, Memorial University, the Marine Institute,
      the City of St. John's, C-CORE, as well as the federal government,
      including NRC Institute for Ocean Technology, NRC Industrial
      Assistance Research Program, Industry Canada, and ACOA.
   supporting local companies to participate in trade shows and
      conferences; and
   partnering with other agencies to assist firms.
